Welcome to Egon’s thermo site I

This photo contains many photos and should do so, it reminds me of the multilayer structure of thermodynamics, see in text below, (c) egon p hassel, 2008.

Hi people,
.
this site is for learning, teaching and education of Technical Thermodynamics aka Engineering Thermodynamics worldwide.
(I just updated my site with Apple (R) http://web.me.com/egon.hassel and it is now in sync with this site.)
I am a teacher at University of Rostock, Germany, and know about the problems of students with this difficult subject. So the main idea is, to create a loose leaflet collection for the different subjects, like Technical Thermodynamics, Heat- and Mass Transfer, Multicomponent Thermodynamics, etc. We should have class room material like script, lecture slides, computer code for problems, material data, etc. as ppt, pptx, or pdf, for free download. Much material is available in different states of quality, but I am afraid, nearly all my material until now is in German. So, over the next years I will translate the material, including the pics, and step by step make it available to YOU, with the hope to help you with this exciting scientific subject. And if you think about it, there is hardly another scientific field which has to do with so many neighboring fields, like e.g. with quantum mechanics and solid state physics and astronomy, thermodynamics has.
The photo above contains many photos and should do so. It reminds me of the multilayer structure of thermodynamics. We see some cars, near and in the back, the photographer, houses, and various memo sheets, and above the glass cabinet we see the bottom of some more pics. All created by reflections of photons from the sun, which are somehow captured, for eternity or at least for a while. Nothing is real but it isn’t false either. The closer we look the more details we see. It is a kaleidoscope. Like Thermodynamics.
Thermodynamics has to do with or is the science of the 5 e‘s (five-e):
• energy: energy conversion, transformation, storage
• entropy: only with entropy we can understand equilibrium, the time arrow, and thermal efficiency
• exergy: is the (technical) availability of work
• economy: the products an engineer creates must be sold
• environment: to minimize the effect of the civilization on environment is crucial for survival
All material here is for learning and teaching only, I take no responsibility for accuracy, completeness, etc, You can use all material for learning and for teaching in classrooms, with crediting the authors, but not for commercial purposes. See Impressum or disclaimer.
All download files are in pdf format, so you would need a pdf reader to open these. You can find one on the first entry of the useful link page.
And here is a funny quote from Sommerfeld about thermo: Quote from Arnold Sommerfeld: Thermodynamics is a funny subject. The first time you go through it, you don't understand it at all. The second time you go through it, you think you understand it, except for one or two small points. The third time you go through it, you know you don't understand it, but by that time you are so used to it, it doesn't bother you any more. (Arnold Johannes Wilhelm Sommerfeld (1868 – 1951) was a German theoretical physicist who pioneered developments in atomic and quantum physics. He introduced the fine-structure constant into quantum mechanics.). (From wikipedia).
So I hope you enjoy this site, and if you have comments or advice, I am looking forward to hear from you.
